Vermicelli Payasam/Semiya Payasam is one of the simple and easy recipes that can be made in an electric pressure cooker in just 5 mins. No need to cook vermicelli separately and add. Everything goes into the pot at a stretch and cooked in 5 mins.
You can call it as one pot kheer too. Saute cashews, raisins, vermicelli in a tbsp of ghee, add the remaining ingredients and set it in the porridge mode for 5 mins. I would like to explain here how the electric pressure cooker works.
Once you turn on the porridge mode or pressure cook mode or any mode, first the display shows pre-heating. It means it is going to take around 2-3 mins to build the pressure. Once the pressure is built, the red valve is sealed. Then the display switches to cooking mode. Here the actual cooking starts and the countdown timer starts. Once it finishes the specified cooking time, the machine beeps and goes to the warm mode. It takes around 10-15 mins to release the pressure normally. Once the pressure goes, the red valve drops automatically. If you are nearby, you can hear the sound of the valve dropping. Now turn the nob to venting position and open the lid. This is how the whole process works regardless of whatever mode you choose.
The best thing about using an electric pressure cooker is we don’t need to babysit around the pot. Once you set the timer, you can go ahead and do some other work and get back to it. Even if the work is finished, it goes to the warm mode. So no need to worry. Again no need to count the whistle sound, which is an annoying part of our traditional pressure cooker. Now let us see how to prepare this recipe.

- 1/2 cup Vermicelli/Semiya
- 3 cups Milk full fat
- 1/4 cup Sugar
- 1/2 tsp Cardamom/Elaichi Powder
- 10 Cashews split into two
- 10 Raisins
- 1 tbsp Ghee
- Turn on SAUTE mode. When the display shows HOT, add ghee.
- Add cashews, raisins, and saute until cashews turn golden brown. Then add vermicelli to this and saute until vermicelli turns golden brown. Cancel SAUTE mode.
- Then add milk, sugar, cardamom powder, and mix all thoroughly. Close the lid. Turn VENT to SEALING position.
- Select Porridge mode on HIGH for 5 mins. Natural Pressure Release (NPR).
- Once the red valve drops, open the lid. Mix all thoroughly and serve hot or chilled.
- The specified amount of milk was enough.
- As we eat less sweet, 1/4 cup of sugar was enough for us. You can add 1/3 cup of sugar instead. 1/2 cup would be too sweet.
- While warm, the consistency of the payasam was perfect. If you are going to chill it and eat, you will need to add an extra half a cup of milk and mix before serving as it thickens while payasam is cooled.
Delicious vermicelli payasam is ready to relish.
